| Plain of Jars |
It’s a mystery! Nobody
knows the origin or purpose of these stone jars
which are several thousand years old and weigh
up to 3 tons each.
The most popular theory is that they are funeral
related vessels. There are several sites mostly
within a radius of 30 km around Phonsavanh. Access
is easy by tuk tuk or taxi. There is an entrance
fee.
WARNING!!! Don’t leave the marked tracks
as the area is scattered with land mines.
Bomb craters are a testimony to the intensity
of the American carpet bombing operation during
the sixties Vietnam war. Still mines explode daily
under the feet of a peasant or a child. Other
gifts include the dumping of defolient which has
eliminated large parts of the forest.
You can reach Phonsavanh by plane or bus.The road is not only good but also scenic.
