Oudomxay, also known as Muang Xay, is the capital of the multi-ethnic province of Oudomxay. It is located in the Nam Ko Basin and surrounded by scenic mountains. The town is a conglomeration of smaller villages at an influential cross section in northern Laos.

 Its proximity to China and Vietnam, along with its multi-ethnicity makes it unique in the region. It is a busy place, but once off the main thoroughfares the typical laid back Lao lifestyle can be found offering interesting discoveries and delicious eateries. The surrounding countryside has several natural features of stunning beauty as well as many ethnic villages to traverse in the mountains.
