Southern Provinces
Saravan

The province of Saravan, or Salavanh as it is sometimes spelled, is similar to its neighbours to the south, Sekong and Attapeu. It is noted for its remoteness and for its many eco-tourism opportunities. These qualities are perhaps what make it a favourite for the traveler who wishes to experience the essential Laos.
One of the most interesting things to witness here is the huge ethnic diversity, including some 14 relatively obscure Mon-Khmer tribes. Stay in the towns of Tahoy where you can visit a traditional weaving village and trek along the famous Ho Chi Min trail, and Tumlan to see the Katang tribe who are highly respected for their weaving skills, for a real experience of this unique slice of Lao ethnicity. The Souphanouvong Bridge is an interesting piece of Laos’ recent history, having been a main supply route for trade between Laos and Vietnam during the war. Elephant trekking, waterfalls, and ethnic villages make this province an eco-trekker’s dream.
