The province offer nice attractions to go out the "buzzy" capital. Simple ride in the country side and along the rivers, visit the small towns on the way to Nam Ngum Lake, visit the Phou Khao Khouay national park, have a lazy day swimming in some waterfalls, etc... Nam Ngum Lake
Nam Ngum, an artificial lake 85km from Vientiane is a beautiful day trip. Some 300 km2 of forest have been flooded with hundreds of small islands which can be reached by restaurant boats, which are exactly what they sound like.
